I got around this by downloading the full (not just Windows) ISO and copying the contents to a temp folder on my HDD. I then went to the baseline library and browsed for the swpackages folder (in my case C: HPSPP hp swpackages). I started at the root of C: and drilled down to swpackages, because leaving it at its default location (already at swpackages) didn't work. After doing that and clicking 'Add', a baseline was added to my Baseline Library, and I could use it to do an inventory.
I have run into another issue that I haven't worked through yet regarding analysis and deployment. I can analyse, but the deploy button never becomes clickable. If anyone has a fix for this, please let me know. This is completely crazy. I have this problem: ' Controller with Flash-Backed Write Cache from Halting During Power-On Self Test with POST Error 1783 After a Power Loss' but the solution listed is to run an.online. flash firmware update - obviously an imposssible task if the controller isn't responding. I found an offline update which could work.
But its an.scexe, with no indication of how to install it. So I fell back to trying the hpsum offline utility. And have been banging my head against what has got to be one of the most unfriendly, impossible to use tools I've ever found. Whats wrong with a simple button 'Update my server' or a list of updates with 'install me' buttons. This baseline rubbish is totally incomprehensible and the tool just plain doesn't work. Nothing seems to let me add the obligitory baseline - without any indication of what its actually looking for. Didn't they consider that someone may not have a baseline to start with?
Bizarrely I had downloaded a version called HPSUMCB620.20140130.11.iso, which was a sprightly 545Mb. Here in this thread everyone is saying we should download version 201402 - which weighs in at no less than 3.2Gb! What on earth happened over the course of a month or two between the two versions? This is truly a ridiculous process. The '1, 2, 3 automatic update' simply doesn't work without a bunch of undocumented clicking trying to figure out how the heck to add a baseline - even the latest version of the support pack 20140421. This process, and its big brother HPSUM are a complete FAIL. Every time I attempt to update drivers/firmware of a server I end up burning an hour just trying to figure out how to start the update process.
The previous spp system actually worked, and was simple. Let's go back to that. I decided to testrun HP SUM 6.3.1 on my Notebook running Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. I copied “swpackages” from my bootable USB stick with SPP 2014.02.0 to C:, like in C: swpackages 2. I copied hpsum631 to C., like in C: hpsum631 Subsequently I ran hpsum.batch (C: hpusm631 hpsum hpsum.bat). This opens an Internet Browser on, clicked on the icon Baseline Library clicked on Add Baseline Under Location Details I clicked on Browse and pointed to C: swpackages.
Click on Add and the Baseline is populated with all the packages from swpackages. This takes quite some time! I repeated exactly the same steps on my HP ML350 Server running Windows Server 2008 SP2 64bit as mentioned above. Hpsum.bat starts in an Internet browser. However when I click on Add Baseline, nothing happens. The question now is: why is it that under Baseline Library the Baseline refuses to be added when I click on Add Baseline. It does not land on the page with Location Details.
I have to correct my previous email where I stated: 'The question now is: why is it that under Baseline Library the Baseline refuses to be added when I click on Add Baseline. It does not land on the page with Location Details.' I DOES land in the page with Location Details, with Location Type and Location Details. Unter Location Type I choose the default 'Browsw HP SUM server path' Unter Location Details, I click on Browse. But it stops there and returns to the initial page.
When I do it in my test invironment Notebook with Windows 7 Enterprise- 64bit, it all goes fine and I am able to browse to the directory with e.g. The recently published Maintenance Service Bundle for SPP. I am pretty sure that tje problem it is related to the Internet Explorer settings. I have Internet Explorer 9 running on my HP Server with Windows Server 2008 SP2 - 64 bit.
But which settings in Internet Explorer 9 cause the Browse function not to start? Which settings have to be applied to allow the Browse function to start properly?
Anything to do with ActiveX Controls? Anything related to MSXML? Please note that I read the Smart Update Manager User Guide v 6.3.0. The trouble shooting page does not cover the problem as described above. Anyone of HP who can give feedback? On my HP Server I decided to choose under Location Type: Download from hp.com (instead of 'Browse HP SUM server path' Under Location Details, I entered: c: temp I clicked on the Retrieve Button (which changed to Blue, after I had entered c: temp under Location Details.and again nothing happened.
It also returned to the Home Page of HP Smart Update Manager 6.3.1. I am flabbergasted. I am very sure that it's Internet Explorer 9 Security Settings related. Or the Advanced Settings under Internet Explorer 9.

I was surprised that with the release of the latest SPP (Service Pack for Proliant) there was a new version of HP SUM (Smart Update Manager), but it was not the long awaited new version 6.0 but a minor update 5.3.5 The new version 6.0 is in fact a completely newly (re)build product from scratch Announcements and beta demo’s told me that this was the product we were waiting for. And now it was not in the new SPP??? However, HP SUM 6.0 seemed to be available as a separate download on the HP website outside the SPP. It seems that there will be a supplement somewhere in October on the SPP with the launch of VMware ESXi 5.5, I assume then HP SUM 6.0 will be in there? And if not, it will be definitely in the next SPP. One of the things that I didn’t like in the ‘old way of working’ SUM 5.x was the ‘Back’ button which was always there but always greyed out So if you finished a deployment, or wanted to add or remove some servers for patching, you always needed to restart HP SUM with a rescan of the repository and so on Very time consuming So I downloaded the new HP SUM 6.0 seperately and started to play with it It was love at first sight! First thing that is different is that it runs as a service now on your PC/server and has a completely redesigned (webbased) layout/homepage First possible actions are the Guided Update (automated, wizard-driven update / currently only available on the localhost where HP SUM 6.0 is started / future versions will also support remote systems), Baseline Library (where you will manage one or more SPP versions) and Nodes (all types of devices supported by HP SUM 6.x).
On top we find the HP SUM 6.0 menu: Here you see the supported devices/categories that aer supported for update by HP SUM 6.0. World politics journal. A blade enclosure will be actually the Onboard Administrator boards inside that will be updated by HP SUM. Further we have the obvious blades, iLO, VM hosts, Virtual Connect and even iPDU and switches. Steps to follow are rather logic and simple! – Add a baseline – Add Nodes – Enclosures – Servers – Switches – iLO – VM hosts – Virtual Connect devices – Run Inventory – Attach a baseline Now you will get a list of required updates on the selected device. How easy can it be? My daughter of 6 could do this!
Like in the previous versions, there is also a Reports generator available that allows you to run inventories upfront and check compliancy with a specific SPP, and which updates are needed: Some new terms were introduced in this new version of HP SUM 6.0 compared to the prvious version 5.x: Repository – Baseline Target – Node Discovery – Scouting / Inventory Install – Deploy I suggest that you try the new HP SUM 6.0 by downloading it from the. You will see that it is a big step in the right direction, and that it will make your life much easier with updating your HP infrastructure.
If you have a HPE Passport login you can create a custom SPP (HPE's Service Pack for Proliant) package - So here you can filter and select Firmware, Drivers and Software and then for operating systems Linux/Windows. Ensure you select to include HPE SUM ( Smart Update Manager) which is a standalone tool to inventory and upgrade your node (server). This is likely to give you a smaller ISO file that can fit onto a single layer DVD. The downloadable SPP includes Windows/Linux drivers/software etc.
Also, this is great as the standard SPP you download from HPE.com is a point in time upgrade, current version although released earlier in 2016, most components are end of 2015, so this custom package has the latest versions of the components. So then you burn the ISO to a DVD/USB and run HPE SUM from it and inventory your Proliant and select which components to upgrade (firmware/drivers/software). I'm basing my comments on Windows version of HPE SUM as we use windows servers only. You can make the disk bootable and have it upgrade firmware that way, but you need to select Linux firmware updates as the bootable disks use a linux environment. This is what we use for customer server builds where no O/S is installed. Dropkick wrote: How am I supposed to update it then.? As well as the iLO and the Storage Array.?So you can use a USB Key.
Problem solved;p. I'd expect HP to have similar capabilities with different names. HP ILO can boot ISO but it is a licensed feature, unlike the iDRAC (big disadvantage). If it is blocked work, I would go home and burn it to a dual layer DVD, problem solved.
DVD readers can read single / dual layered discs. In that case, if it's not licensed I'd get quotes for licensing ALL servers for this capability. Then present that plus a request for exception to policies that ban booting to USB drives. Also perhaps a quote for some dual layer DVD's. Cheap, Fast or Easy.
Use HP Smart Update Manager, HP SUM. Download and run, runs in web browser. Can be run on localhost, what HP deems the server to be upgraded, or run on another computer and update 'nodes'. Download the latest SPP and place it into the 'Baseline'. Set up how to detect your HP servers, iLO, Windows credentials, WMware vCenter.
Quick video to get you familiar Download site, quick specs, manuals The 7.5.1 manual, read from front to back trust me you'll need to. Tell you the truth I just set it up last week after spending two days reading the manual, how to guides, and so on.
I have a ESXi host, with no vCenter so I set it to detect by iLO, you'll need the iLO IP address and credentials. After adding the basline, that took about a half hour 45 minutes, I used it to analyze what updates I needed. However, it only said I needed the iLO updated which I know it does, but everything else needs updated to. I think I will have to install vCenter on something around here. Good morning, first thanks for all of the replies, I will try to respond to all of them.
This is a standalone closed system. No I can not connect any other system, (laptop, network or internet) No its not IT policy, its DOD policy. No I can't not use dual layer DVDs, again, DOD policy, due to THIS system. Would love iLO to boot to ISO, if I could access iLO. Need a browser for that. This Gen8 server only has UEFI access (RBSU) because firmware isn't updated, I am unable to access the virtual disk. SSH is again not allowed, smh.
That awesome youtube video, is wonderful, although I had an HP ilo engineer confirm, this Gen8 server does not have the embedded iLo admin features. I have to use RBSU or the iLo utility within Intelligent Provisioning. Also, my server is newer than the one in the video.smh the rest of the replies, which I greatly appreciate are moot. This is standalone. Another question, I never thought of extraction. My only issue, this is a secured space. NO INTERNET to any system.
So Anton7022, can you elaborate further. Again, I will not be able to use an USBkey, can I slap this on a regular CD? Other wise, Houston we have a MAJOR problem.

I think best for you will use 'self-prepared' ISO based at HP Smart Update Manager,( HP SUM). This soft can be free download from HP.com. (at least ear ago - free). ISO without any updatepackages very thin - 270 - 300 MB.
Download all updates for your server, put their in a ' BASELINE', burn CD. NUKE Hardware. Something like this. Arthur7976 says deal - CUSTOM SPP. Just another name for HP SUM Edited Aug 16, 2016 at 2:32 UTC.

'elaborate further' about 'How you can SQUEEZE SPP'. SPP can be divided into a shell application and a large number of files updates for a large number of server models that occupy the overwhelming volume of the disc. Our conditions of the problem - we have enough disk space, and we need to upgrade only one server model.
SOLUTION - DELETE ALL that is not necessary. Download the update packages for our server. Open ISO-image SPP find the folder ' hp swpackages'. Remove from this folder as many files as we need space. Then copy to this folder our updates.
I personally HAVE tested and used the network update myself, not only with windows servers (BL460's) but also HP DL380 G7 and Gen8 servers running VMware and it does work. To the OP: Don't get caught up on your physical media issue (USB, DVD, CD, etc). The solution you need is to run SSP and update over the network. Your physical media is a cable.

You can also target more than one server for a scan this way and see what needs to be done without booting into the CD just to do the same thing. Faster and works in a non-disruptive way. Sounds like you got it sorted out anyways.
